Největší rozdíl, který pro mne peníze přinesou je to, že se až do konce života budu moci zabývat věcmi, které mne baví a nebudu se muset starat o peníze.

Takže si myslím, že budu pokračovat v tom, co dělám už teď. Budu si hrát s kódem. Budu přemýšlet a rozšiřovat podvratné myšlenky. Bud cestovat a přednášet. Budu psát články. Budu rozdávat rány pěstí říším zla, kdykoliv to bude možné. Budu pracovat pro svobodu.

Očekávám, že většina náhle zbohatnuvších hackerů učiní podobnou volbu. Novináři se mne často ptají, jestli může komunitu otevřeného software korumpovat příliv velkých peněz. ňíkám jim to, v co pevně věřím: komerční firmy již tak dlouho lákají programátory, že každý, koho peníze opravdu přitahují z této komunity již dávno odešel. Naše společenství je vybíráno na jiných základech: dosažených úspěších, pýše, umělecké vášni,....

OK, možná se nakonec rozhoupám a koupím si mobil. A pořádnou pevnou linku, takže budu moci surfovat rychlostí blesku. A novou flétnu. A možná i pěknou rozžhavenou 0.45 pro taktickou střelbu. Ale opravdu, nechci ani nepotřebuji mnoho. Já jsem svým způsobem budhista: dávám přednost tomu, abych byl co nejméně materiálně vázán. Nemíním ovšem minimalizovat své materiální vazby tím, že všechno rozdám, takže vy, různí kazatelé ve prospěch mnoha projektů se uklidněte a zapomeňte na to, že mne připravíte o mé miliony. Nebude ze mne žádná měkota a hrubě odmítnu všechny dotěrnosti.

Já nechci být takovým hrubiánem proto, abych zachránil své miliony, ale proto, abych uchránil něco mnohem cenějšího, svůj čas. Já se nechci stát plně zaměstnaným specialistou v rozhodování o tom, co všechno musím zachránit a dopředu oznamuji, že odmítnu každého. Kdokoliv, kdo mne požádá o peníze, bez ohledu na to, jak šlechetný je jeho cíl a jak mnoho s ním souhlasím, zařadím na svůj permanentní seznam hovad. Pokud budu chtít půjčit nebo investovat peníze, *já vás zavolám*. (Výdech...)

A ovšem, existují případy, kam chci peníze vkládat. Uznáníhodné hackerské projekty. Aktivity spojené se svobodou projevu. Kampaň za právo nosit zbraň. Tibet, možná. Možná někde koupím kus tropického pralesa jako můj příspěvek k ochraně životního prostředí. Miliony znamenají moc, a s mocí přichází odpovědnost je použít moudře. Budu rozdávat obezřetně, a až budu sám chtít a pouze poté, až si vše sám ověřím. Příliš mnoho péče často zabíjí to, o co se má pečovat. A to by stačilo.

A trochu ironicky, jedním z výsledků toho, že jsem zbohatl bude to, že budu pravděpodobně chtít zaplatit svoje projevy, protože mne už nebude moci nikdo obvinit, že všechno dělám pro peníze. Nenechám se platit skupinami otevřeného software nebo školami, ale vesele si nechám zaplatit za všechny obchodní konference, které mne chtějí pro zvýšení návštěvnosti. Tím, že si svůj čas nechám proplatit, oddělím drahé konference, na které přijíždějí významní lidé, od těch okrajových, na kterých z mé přítomnosti nemůže hackerské společenství tolik profitovat.

Ze stejného důvodu trvám stále na tom, aby každý, kdo chce moji přednášku pokryl mé útraty a eliminoval možné nepříjemnosti. Stále však očekávám, že si budu nosit vlastní zavazadla. A nikdy nebudu tak pyšný, abych se odmítl složit na něčí gauč, pokud místní skupina je příliš chudá na to, aby zaplatila hotel.
